From the drawing books.  I rarely used sketchbooks until I arrived in Germany, prefering instead to draw on loose paper clamped to a board. Actually, I had always felt uncomfortable ( indeed I still do ) with the idea of sketching. I suppose in truth it is just that I am too slow to get what I want in a short space of time. The drawings from the books therefore are not really sketches and are seldom finished on location. They were drawn both out of curiosity and for the fun of it. In part they are an end in themselves, and differ neither in technique nor in subject matter from the larger watercolours.  But the fact that I have carried them around with me, that they are bound together and represent particular time spans, invest them I think with an intensity that is difficult to replicate in the studio work. Of course some of the drawings have found their way into the Studio Compositions, often at a much later date. The drawings on this page have been made since I moved to Weserbergland - and perhaps more tellingly, since I have been teaching in Detmold. Many of the drawings originated whilst out and about with the students - from whom of course one can also learn so much.

Walking the landscape. Drawings from two small books that I carry around with me in summer when I`m out walking. Impressions of things that catch my eye.
